Nvidia has confirmed that its GPUs, running inside Google Cloud, are now powering parts of Apple Intelligence. Three companies that spend most of their time competing for the same customers just admitted they need each other to keep AI features running.
The disclosure came quietly, buried in infrastructure notes rather than a splashy keynote, but its implications are not quiet at all. Apple has spent two years insisting its AI strategy rests on its own silicon and its own data centres. Leaning on Nvidia chips inside a Google-run cloud shows how far that self-reliance story has bent under real demand.
Why Apple needed the help
Apple Intelligence rolled out slower than most of its rivals' AI products, and much of that lag traced back to compute. Training and serving large models at the scale Apple now needs requires GPU capacity that even a company with Apple's balance sheet cannot always build fast enough on its own timeline. Renting Nvidia-powered capacity through Google Cloud lets Apple close that gap without waiting years for its own server farms to catch up.
For Nvidia, the arrangement is another sign that its chips have become the default layer underneath nearly every serious AI effort, regardless of which company is nominally in charge of the stack above it. Google, meanwhile, gets to sell spare capacity to a company it competes with in phones, search and now AI assistants, turning a rival into a paying tenant.
A rivalry with a shared basement
None of this makes the three companies friends. Apple, Google and Nvidia are still fighting over app stores, search defaults, chip supply and the next generation of on-device AI. But the cloud layer underneath all of that fighting has quietly become shared infrastructure. It mirrors what happened with cloud computing a decade ago, when fierce retail competitors like Walmart still ended up renting servers from Amazon because building their own was slower and costlier than renting the market leader's.
"The compute layer has become too expensive and too specialised for anyone to fully go it alone," said one infrastructure analyst tracking the deal.
What this means for India
India does not host the data centres involved in this particular arrangement, but the ripple effects reach Indian developers and businesses directly. A large share of Apple's AI feature rollouts, including features Indian users have been waiting for in Siri and on-device writing tools, depend on the same compute pipelines this deal expands. Faster access to GPU capacity abroad tends to translate into faster feature rollouts in markets like India, where Apple has been pushing hard on both iPhone sales and services revenue.
Indian AI startups building on Google Cloud also stand to benefit indirectly. Increased Nvidia GPU deployment inside Google's infrastructure, driven by a customer as large as Apple, pushes Google to keep expanding total capacity, some of which eventually becomes available to smaller cloud customers, including Indian companies that rent rather than own GPU clusters. Bengaluru and Hyderabad-based AI teams have complained for over a year about GPU scarcity and long wait times for high-end Nvidia chips; deals like this one, even indirectly, add pressure on cloud providers to keep growing supply.
What to watch
The bigger question is whether this becomes a template. If Apple is willing to rent Nvidia capacity through a rival's cloud, other companies with ambitious AI roadmaps and limited infrastructure may follow the same path rather than building from scratch. That would further cement Nvidia's position as the one supplier every AI company needs, no matter how much they compete with each other everywhere else.
Watch for whether Apple discloses more details about the scope of this arrangement in its next earnings call, and whether Google starts marketing spare Nvidia capacity more openly to other large AI customers.
